What is a Bottomless/Naked Portafilter?
A bottomless portafilter lets you see the espresso flow directly from the basket, offering a clear view of your extraction process. It's perfect for spotting channeling—an issue where water finds weak points in your coffee puck, rushing through unevenly and leading to a bitter, uneven shot.
With a bottomless portafilter, channeling shows up as erratic, splattery streams or gaps in the flow. Ideally, you want a smooth, honey-like stream that forms evenly from the basket. If you notice channeling, it’s a cue to adjust your grind, improve your tamp, or distribute the coffee grounds more evenly. It’s like a diagnostic tool for better shots!
Is a Bottomless Portafilter Better?
It depends on what you’re after! A bottomless portafilter is a great tool for dialing in your espresso. It gives you a clear view of how your shot’s pulling—any uneven flow or channeling is easy to spot.
Plus, it’s easier to clean, works with a wider range of basket sizes, and let’s be honest, it looks amazing in action!
That said, it’s less forgiving than a spouted portafilter if your technique’s off. If you love geeking out over your espresso and tweaking your grind and tamp, it’s definitely worth the upgrade.
Are Portafilter Baskets Universal?

With purchases of two dual-spout 58mm portafilter handles, one in blackwood and one in rich rosewood with precision baskets, my setup from Hypergrind has a much more elevated appearance and feel than my stock tools. Not only are they handsomely crafted, they add professional quality to the entire kit. I feel that the Breville Dual-Boiler Espresso Machine and the Eureka Mignon Specialita Grinder, I don’t feel in any hurry to purchase more expensiive equipment now. Cannot use it it does not fit my $3000 Breville espresso machine. I now have no use for it.
Beautiful portafiller but quite a bit chunkier than the original that came with the Breville Oracle Touch, so my mug doesn't fit underneath anymore. Guess I should have gone for the bottomless. The basket that came with it however is too smooth for the Breville Oracle Touch autotamp, and the tamp fan just spins the grinds around rather than getting any purchase on them, regardless of how low/high it is set or hard the tamp setting is. Had to buy a different basket which immediately solved the issue. Still, an overall upgrade from the stock portafiller.

The portafilter is good quality with a real wood handle that screws on. It is noticeably larger than the original so it is a bit tricky getting some cups or mugs in and out compared to the original one.
